MARY M. GOODSON

Mary (Manyx) Goodson, 78, of Pine Tree Road in Quincy, Il,  died  suddenly at Blessing Hospital on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, following a brief illness. A graduate of Quincy University and a retiree from Two Rivers Regional Council, Mary was a bookkeeper for Mike Goodson Motors in Quincy, from the company's founding in 1995. Mary had also worked in the office of Dean of Students at Quincy High School in the 1960's and 1970's. Through her various careers, Mary said, she had the pleasure of knowing and working with several generaations of Quincyans.

Besides being a voracious reader and an avid fan of the Quincy Community Little Theater, Mary was a serious student of genealogy and worked to trace her roots to her ancestral home in County Clare, Ireland, decades before the internet was available to assist such search endeavors. Through her research, Mary learned that one of her forebears was a Patriot who fought for American independence. As a result, Mary was proud to become a Daughter of the American Revolution, affiliated with the Dorothy Quincy Chapter of the DAR, and was recently appointed the chapter's Historian. Mary continued her genealogical pursuits throughout her life, helping her own family and many friends in this important work. Mary was well-traveled, having visited most of the United States, Canada and her beloved Ireland. For the past several years, Mary had been planning travels to Peru where she hoped to "walk in the clouds" on Machu Picchu, but she did not live to realize her dream.

Born December 13, 1933, in LaBelle, MO, she married Vernon Goodson in 1951, the friend of her youth from the neighboring community of Knox City, MO. Vernon passed away in 1965. The couple had five children together. In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by two of her children; daughter, Kathy, who died in infancy, and son, Mark, who died in 1973; her parents, Henry and Mabel Kelley Manyx; and son-in -law, Kim Wilson.

Surviving are brothers Pat Manyx of Labelle, MO and Robert Manyx (Jacke Brown) of Quincy; a son, Mike Goodson (Maggie) of Quincy; daughters Patrice Wilson of Collinsville, IL, and  Luanne Goodson of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Justin Wilson (Amanda) of Maryville, IL, Megan Goodson of Stafford, VA, Ian Wilson of Collinsville, IL, Kellen Goodson of Quincy, Daniel Taylor (Tamara) of Stafford, VA and Jerry Taylor of Palmyra, MO; great grandchildren, DJ, Jake, Gwen and Penny Taylor all of Stafford, VA and Teagan Wilson of Maryville, IL; and the very special friends of Mary and her family: Mary Esther Florea of LaBelle, MO, LilliAnn Dittmer of Quincy and Nancy Winters of Quincy.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 am in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Disseler officating.  Burial will be in LaBelle Cemetery, LaBelle, MO.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 pm and Saturday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Daughters of the American Revolution, Dorothy Quincy Chapter, or the charity of your choice. If Mary could tell you her wish for a fitting memorial, it would be this: To ensure that all children are--and know that they are-- loved, cherished, respected, fed, educated, valued, and encouraged to reach for the stars!

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy, when skies are gray. You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away."
