   Dr. Philip Randall Giles, 96, of the Illinois Veterans’ Home in Quincy, formerly of Cape Cod, MA, died at 7:10 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the Veterans’ Home.

   Born January 23, 1917 in Haverhill, MA., Dr. Giles was the son of Nelson R. and Ina Butler Giles. He was married to Aurelie Proctor of Fayville, MA., in June of 1941.

   He was a graduate of Tufts University Theological School and served Unitarian Universalist churches around the country, and in Croydon, England. In 1963 he was accorded an honorary STD degree by Tufts, and another a year later by St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

   As a World War II Army Air Corps chaplain, he spent two years in New Guinea and several months in Tokyo during the occupation.  He subsequently joined the Air Force reserves, and was instrumental in the design of the Air Force Academy chapel in Colorado Springs.  He retired with a rank of colonel in 1977.

   Dr. Giles began his 65-year ministerial career in South Woodstock, Vermont, and performed his last pastorate at Barnstable, MA in the 1990’s.  He served as Vice President for Fund Raising of the Unitarian Universalist Association in Boston in the 1970’s, and was well-known at congregations around the country. In 1959, his guidance helped make the merger of the Unitarian and Universalist churches a reality.

   Survivors include Lee Giles Hirstein of Schaumburg, IL, Susan Giles Godsey of Nehalem, OR, two grandchildren and one great grandchild, nieces and nephews and
his sister-in-law.  

   He was predeceased by his wife, parents and a brother, Paul T., of Concord, NH.

   Cremation rites have been accorded to Dr. Giles. Services will be held at a later date
in St. Albans, Maine, site of the family cemetery since the 1760’s.
