JOHN ROBERT "BOB" STEFFEN

   Mr. John Robert "Bob" Steffen, 86, of Quincy, died at 10:45 p.m. Saturday (December 31, 2011) in Blessing Hospital.

   Born May 29, 1925, Bob was the son of Cecil Wayne and Anna Lee Wear Steffen. He was raised in the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and John Sprick from the age of ten. Bob married Bernice Billings in 1945. She preceded him in death in 2003.

   Bob enjoyed league and tournament bowling and playing in card tournaments, having won three Gin Rummy tournaments in Denver, Colorado. He also looked forwad to playing cards at the Quincy Senior Center. He was an avid Cubs fan and a member of the Quincy American Legion Post No. 37, Quincy V.F.W Post No. 5129, Elks Club No.100, Rocky Point Club, Twin Oaks, Fraternal Order of Eagles and  the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers Union Local  Lodge No. 822.

    Mr. Steffen served his country in the Army during WWII.  Bob was in the First Wave at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Landing of June 6, 1944. He was wounded on June 16 and received the Purple Heart and a Bronze Battle Star.

   His sense of humor and jokes remained with him until the very end. His faith and acceptance of his Lord Jesus Christ helped him to make his final decision to discontinue dialysis and go home to be with his Lord.

   Mr. Steffen was employed at Colt Industries for 36 years until his retirement.

   Survivors include his long time companion, Phyllis Williams of Quincy, whom he met on New Years Eve 1997 and he passed away on New Years Eve 2011; a son, Michael Powell of Menifee, CA; a step son, Larry Woods of Quincy; a granddaughter, Carrie Weppler and her husband Matt; three great grandchildren, Landon Weppler,  and twins, Owen and Olivia;  a brother, William "Bill" Steffen and his wife Betty of Quincy; a sister, Wilma Sprick of Quincy; and several loving nieces and nephews.  

   Mr. Steffen was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert Michael Steffen; two brothers, Elmo Steffen and Donald Payne; and three sisters, JoAnn Vosburgh, Edith Lorenz and Wanna Lee Perrigo.

    Graveside services will be held Friday morning at 11:00 in Greenmount Cemetery with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and  the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail.

   Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.

   Memorials may be made to the Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 or to the Illinois Veterans Home Activity Fund.
