   Mr. John L. Garner, 92,of Manito, Illinois, formerly of Quincy, died at  12:15 p.m. Wednesday (March 21, 2012) in his home.            

   Born December 28, 1919 in South Dakota, John was the son of Lewis and Lucinal Nokes Garner.   He married Rita Poor Heskett  in Manito, Illinois. She preceded him in death on December 13, 2007.

   John was of the Christian Faith. He enjoyed pitching horseshoes and was a State Champion and member of the Horseshoe Club.

   John was employed by CIPS (Central Illinois Public Service) for 34 years on the Line & Tree Crew. He retired in 1982.

   Survivors include a son, Gary Garner (Bernice) of Quincy; two daughters, Cheryl Schreyer (Richard) of Sleepy Hollow, FL and Pattie Askins (John) of Manito, IL; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; one brother, Ray Garner of Charlotte, MI; one sister, Florence Omer (Hank) of Tampa, FL. Also surviving are many loving nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Garner was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rita, whom he loved dearly and who changed his life completely; one brother, Lloyd Garner and one sister, Clara Hoover.

   Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery near Timewell, IL.

   Visitation will be held Friday morning at 10:00 until the time of services.

   Memorials may be made to  the Quincy Humane Society.

A life well lived leaves a legacy of love.....with warmest sympathy from those of us in Florida. Fond memories of Uncle John

Nephew Guy and Glennis Omer, nephew Henry and Linda Omer, sister Florence and husband Hank Omer. Very sorry we cannot be there.

So sorry for your familys loss. John and my dad had many great horseshoe games together over the years. When it would come down to the final game many times it was my dad and him. Dad respected him as a fierce competitor but also a friend. Their matches would always start with a handshake and end with a handshake more times than not John was the one smiling at the end. Hopefully him and dad are throwing doubles in heaven as we speak. God Bless
