Born February 14, 1951 in Pittsfield, IL, Steve was the son of Barbara Smith.  He married Linda C. Hale on June 20, 1971 in Decatur, IL.  She survives.

Steve enjoyed working outside mowing, planting flowers and landscaping around he and Linda's home.  He also remodeled every home that he and Linda lived in as they moved through out his railroad career.  He loved doing his own mechanic work, building computers for his family and raising Bichon Dogs.  He especially loved the time he spent with his grandchildren, encouraging and giving direction in their lives.

He worked on the Norfolk-Southern Railroad in the Division Engineering Department from 1968 until 1998.  He was responsible for lining out the product materials for tracks in his Division of over five states.  He was also in charge of any train derailment in his division.  He was nominated for man of the year by Norfolk-Southern Railroad in 1984 and was honored by Norfolk-Southern upon his retirement.  He then worked for the Terminal Railroad in St. Louis, MO for 9 years until retiring in 2008.  He was a member of the Attica Ohio Masonic Lodge No. 367.

Survivors include his wife Linda and his grandchildren J.J. and Joey Barker both of Pittsfield, IL and a great grandchild Jackson Barker of Pittsfield; one sister Connie Lerch of Baylis, IL.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his mother Barbara Smith.

A celebration of Life and Remembrances will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with eulogies by friends and family. Burial will be in the Payson New Cemetery.

I worked with Steve on the Ohio Div way back in the 80's and 90's. Although I haven't seen Steve in several years, I think of him often and I will miss him. We had many good days together on th RR.

I am so sorry for your loss. I'm Stevie's cousin and I haven't seen him or talk to him since I was 13yrs. old. I lost track of him after he moved to Decatur with Linda. I've thought of him often and missed him very much. I wish I'd known you all lived so close because my brother Dale and I would loved to have seen him. Is it OK if I try to come to visitation on Friday. Please accept my love and prayers during this time of grief.

Hi Christine,

This is your cousin Ramona, your Uncle Bill's youngest daughter, we hope that you will be able to come so we can see you. I'm sorry to respond to your condolences with this posting but we were not sure how to reach you by phone.
