GENE SMITH

   Mr. Gene Smith, 86, of Quincy died at 2:24 p.m. Monday (November 25, 2013) in Blessing Hospital.

   Born August 29, 1927  in St. Paul, MN he was the son of Anthony and Marie Sorenson Smith. He married Johnina Wilson on September 26, 1953 in Quincy. She preceded him in death on October 15, 2001.

   Gene was a member of Luther Memorial Church. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, Iowa where he played on the 1944-45 State Tournament Basketball team. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from  South Dakota University  in 1950 and was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He was also a former member of the Elks Club, enjoyed dancing  and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan.

   Mr. Smith started his career as a sales representative for Proctor & Gamble. He then became the Sales Manager of the Men's Department at Carson Pirie Scott until its closing in 1980. He then worked in advertising sales for 30 years until his retirement in 2007.

   Survivors include two daughters, Toni Black (Michael) of Quincy and Jeri Kenning (Robert) of Evansville, IN; two grandchildren, David Ludwig (Dana) of Quincy and Kelli Day (Joseph) of Newburgh, IN; four great grandchildren, Landon and Lucas Ludwig and Connor and Keegan Day; one brother, Dr. Gerald Smith (Phyllis) of Ames, IA; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Wagner of Loveland, CO; two nephews, Brian Smith (Fazia) of Miami Beach, FL and Dr. Gregory Wagner (Deborah) of Foster City, CA.; two nieces, Cheri Orwig (Mel) of Loveland, CO and Lynda Schrand (Dennis) of Rockford, IL

   He was preceded in death by his wife Johnina, his parents and a brother-in-law Warren Wagner.

   A memorial service will be held Saturday at 12:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Metz officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Saturday morning from 11:30 until the time of services at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to Luther Memorial Church or to the Quincy Humane Society.

I would like to express my condolences for your loss. I will miss Gene's smile and jokes when visiting. He was such a good person and a good friend to my mother. He will be greatly missed.

To the family of gene I have known him 10years from the casino I worked there he was a very caring person and I will miss him my thoughts and prayers go out to you
