LESTER  HAMANN

   Mr. Lester A. "Les" Hamann, 91, of Sunset Home, formerly of 3320 State Street, Quincy, died at 11:12 a.m. Wednesday (April 30, 2014) in Sunset Home.

   Born April 11, 1923 in Quincy, Les was the son of Julius and Sadie Haroz Hamann. He married Doris Jean Kurfman on June 28, 1947 in East St. Louis, Illinois. She survives.

   Mr. Hamann proudly served his country as an Army medic during WW II.  He served in combat in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe and in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Hamann received the Purple Heart and was awarded the Silver Star for heroism during the enemy bombing of a field hospital.

   Mr. Hamann was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ, V. F. W. Post 5129, Machinist Local 822 and the Gardner Denver Quarter Century Club. An avid fisherman and hunter, he also enjoyed bowling, golfing, pitching horseshoes, collecting coins and woodworking.

   Mr. Hamann was employed at Gardner Denver for 34 years, retiring in 1985.

   Survivors include his wife of 66 years,  Doris Jean; a son, Dennis "Denny" Hamann (April Butler) of Quincy; three daughters, Wanda L. Hamann-Salsman of Quincy, Julie Clapper (Gary) of Payson, IL and Carla Daggett (Gary) of Quincy; three grandchildren, Teena Obert (Chuck), Tim Daggett (Brenda), Johnathan Hamann (Kia); seven step grandchildren, DawnWhitcomb (Charles), Amy Veach (Jamie), Carrieann Hodge Cannady, Andrew Salsman (Trish), Kenny Salsman (Amanda), John Salsman II, and Junior Whitcomb (Meshella); eight great grandchildren, Jerad Obert, Jacob Obert, Jennifer Obert, Alyssa Daggett, Ashley Daggett, Adler Hamann, Genevieve Hamann, Liviana Hamann; thirteen step great grandchildren, Errick Salsman, Breanna Salsman, Gavin Salsman, Kaitlyn Salsman, Alesha Whitcomb, Maise Whitcomb, Jenna Meredith, James Meredith, Jessie Meredith, Hailey Mortimer, Carmen Gerard, Dylan Muldoon and Sawyer Veach; two great great grandchildren, Tyson Daggett and Lilly Anne Obert; a step great great grandchild, Brayden Meredith; a sister in law, Mary A. Hamann of Quincy; a brother in law, Alvin Kurfman of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Hamann was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Danielle Hamann; a son in law, John Salsman; two brothers, Carl Hamann and Julius "J.J." Hamann; a sister, Florence Anderson; and a sister in law, Dorty Hamann.

   Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Ken Kramer.  Burial with Military Honors by the Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Illinois National Guard Funeral Detail will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Saturday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to Salem Church, Quincy Humane Society  or the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
