DOROTHY L. CORY

Dorothy L. Cory, 90, of Quincy died at 1:40 p.m. Monday (July 21, 2014) in Sunset Home.

Born November 22, 1923 in Griggsville, IL, Dorothy was the daughter of Merrill and Laverne Moore Laird.  She married Victor William Cory on March 21, 1943.  He preceded her in death on April 15, 2012.

She was a graduate of Griggsville High School and received her bachelor of science degree from Quincy College in 3 years.  Dorothy was a long time member of Vermont St. United Methodist Church and the Double Ring Sunday School Class.  She served as chairperson of the Dolphine Fellowship, the Spiritual Life Chairperson of the United Methodist Women, Chairperson of the Chaddock Boy's Auxiliary and served on the Chaddock Boy's School Board of Directors.  She was also a member of P.E.O., Chapter FH, and served as an assistant Brownie Scout Leader when her children were involved.  After a debilitating illness curtailed her activities she continued her special interests in needy children and the elderly anonymously behind the scenes.  Dorothy's family was the most important aspect of her life, with her grandchildren being a source of great pride and happiness.

Mrs. Cory was employed as a secretary for Quincy Public Schools for 12 years and was also a substitute teacher in the Quincy, Hannibal and Mendon Schools.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Ann Cory and Vicki Cory Blackwell (Ed Willing Jr.) both of Quincy; one son Kevin Cory (Jan) of Quincy; five grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and two brothers Donald Laird (Pat) of Elgin, IL and Vincent Laird (Kay) of Galesburg, IL.

Mrs. Cory was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Victor, a daughter Janice Lynn, a brother Paul Laird and his wife Georgia and two sisters Eileen Dunham and her husband Joe and Helen Laird.

Visitation will be private for the family but friends are welcome to attend the Graveside Service Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Quincy Memorial Park with Chaplain Clif Weisinger officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Feed the Children or to the Leukemia Foundation.
