   Phyllis J. Sparks, 86, of Quincy, died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday (August 20, 2014) at North Adams Home in Mendon, Illinois.

   Born July 12, 1928 in Quincy, Illinois, Phyllis was the daughter of Virgil and Gladys Niekamp Wood. Virgil Wood was killed on the Railroad when Phyllis was 2 1/2 months old. Gladys later married John Hosman and Phyllis was adopted by John as her father.  

   Phyllis married Kenneth D. Sparks on January 15, 1949 in Quincy. He preceded her in death on November 29, 1996.

   Phyllis was a member of  Faith Christian Church. She enjoyed cooking, baking and traveling, but her passion was tending to her flowers and growing African Violets.  
   A 1946 graduate of Quincy High School, Phyllis was employed at the International Shoe Factory until her marriage. Phyllis then devoted her life to caring for and raising her family which she often said "meant the world to me".  

   Survivors include a son, Gary D. Sparks (Sherry) of Fowler, IL; two daughters in law, Rita Sparks and Connie Sparks both of Quincy; six grandchildren, Richard Sparks (Pennie), Robert Sparks, Rochelle Neuman (Christopher), David Sparks and Tammy Jean Lummer all of Quincy and  Lisa Marie Sparks of Fowler, IL; five great grandchildren, Jordin Sparks, Kaylea Sparks and Austyn Stambaugh all of Quincy  and Tanner Sparks and Conner Sparks both of Camp Point, IL; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

   Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cheryl Kay Lummer; and two sons, Ronald K. Sparks and David K. Sparks.

   Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Henry Pratt and Rev. Matt Worstell.  Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Monday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to the Blessing Foundation for Hospice, Faith Christian Church or North Adams Home.

Gary I am so sorry for the loss of your wonderful Mother. As you know your family and mine go back to childhood days. She could sure fry up some good ole chicken. Sympathy to all the family. KD and Phyllis were wonderful ppl.
