   Mr. John Philip Gay, 76, of Quincy, died at 1:36 a.m. Sunday (October 12, 2014) in Blessing Hospital.

   Born May 8, 1938 in Big Neck, Illinois, John was the son of  George F. and Magdalena Waigand Gay. On April 2, 1960, he married Marjorie Kay Hudson in Ursa, Illinois.

   Mr. Gay served his country in the U. S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. John was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia and served aboard the U.S.S. Everglades during the crisis in the Suez Canal.

   An avid sportsman and outdoorsman, John was a Die Hard Cubs Fan, a supporter and booster of Blue Devil Basketball and Q. U. Hawks Basketball and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting, golfing, bowling and in his earlier years, playing softball and basketball. He was devoted to his family and loved following the activities of his children and grandchildren. John especially enjoyed his many trips to his "Heaven on Earth", Lake Vermillion, Minnesota.

   John was a member of North Side Boat Club and was an active supporter of United Way.  John credits Alcoholics Anonymous with "saving his life" and he became very involved with helping others change their lives as a leader at many A. A. meetings. In 1984, John was named the "Volunteer of the Year" by the Western Illinois Council on Alcoholism.

   John was employed for over 30 years at Gardner Denver Company and was currently employed at Titan Wheel, where he has worked for 20 years.

   Survivors include two daughters, Lori Lynn Sanchez-Vera (Martin Willing) of Quincy and Shelly Medsker (Kenneth) of Quincy; four grandchildren, John Sanchez-Vera (Katherine) of St. Louis, MO, Erick Sanchez-Vera of Springfield, IL, Natasha Sanchez-Vera (Tim) of Ft. Bragg, N.C. and Marcus Medsker (Meghan) of Chicago, IL; three great grandchildren, Keegan Angell, Mason Sanchez-Vera and Landon Sanchez-Vera; a brother, Carson Gay (Mary) of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Gay was preceded in death by his parents; and his maternal grandfather, Pete Waigand, who played an important role in John's life.  
   Funeral services will be held Wednesday evening at 7:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Ken Kramer. Inurnment with Military Honors will be held at a later date.

   Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Shelly and Lori,
We are so very sorry for your loss. We always enjoyed the time we spent with your father. He was a good man and a great friend to us when we lived on Dee Drive. Please accept our sincere sympathy in your loss. We are out of town and unable to attend the visitation. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.
