   Daniel T. "Dan" Ernst, 83, of Quincy, died at 11:20 a.m. Monday (April 20, 2015) in Sunset Home in Quincy.

   Born March 5, 1932 in Quincy, Dan was the son of Elmo and Kathryn Lamy Ernst.  He married Mary Schulte on April 23, 1955 in St. Francis Catholic Church in Quincy.  She survives.

   Dan attended St. Francis grade school and St. Joseph Seminary for Franciscans in Chicago. He was a 1950 graduate of Quincy Notre Dame High School, serving as Vice President of his class. He then attended Gem City Business College until joining the Navy in 1952.  Mr. Ernst served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Maury during the Korean War.

   Dan was a member of the of  St. Peters Catholic Church where he coached boys sports for 22 years. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Quincy American Legion Post 37 and the Mart Heinen Club. An avid golfer, Dan was a member of the Spring Lake Country Club. Dan also enjoyed bowling and was City Bowling Champion in 1957.

   Dan's greatest joy was following the activities of his children and more recently his grandchildren.  Dan took an active role in his community, serving as  a past board member of St. Mary Hospital and was a past chairman of the Quincy Notre Dame, Quincy University and Culver Stockton College Annual Fund Drives.

   Following his discharge from the Navy, Dan became a sales representative for General Foods, selling jello and cake mix. He later was employed at Honaker's Food Company until he began a 56 year career with the Woodmen Accident and Life Insurance Company as an agent. Dan was named Agency Manager in 1969 and continued with Woodmen until his retirement.

   Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Thomas Ernst (Jenny) and John Ernst (Debbie) both of Quincy; two daughters, Carol McCabe (Mike) of Quincy and Ann Kirlin (Kent Ihrig) of Liberty, IL;   eleven grandchildren, Drew Ernst of Quincy, Elizabeth Ernst of Quincy, Alexandria Ernst of Quincy, Olivia Ernst of Ft. Worth, TX, Erica Ernst of Quincy, Myles McCabe (Sindhuja Rao) of St. Louis, MO;  Matthew McCabe of Burlington, VT, Nicole Kirlin (Finance', Austin Ramsey) of Lincoln, NE; Greg Kirlin  of Macomb, IL, Blake Kirlin of Camp Point, IL and Lucy Clark of  Canton, MO; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

   Mr. Ernst was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter in law, Deelite Ernst.

   Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 at the St. Peters Catholic Church with Monsignor Leo Enlow officiating.  Burial with Military Honors by the Quincy American Legion Post No. 37 and the U. S. Navy Funeral Honors Detail will be in Calvary Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00  and Thursday morning until the time of services at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.

   Memorials may be made to St. Peter's School Sports Program.

I told mom about dan's passing and she said oh, I should call Mary. I told her I would email a note to you. We are all sorry for your loss and will keep you in our thoughts and prayers.Mom is in a wheelchair all the time and can't see very well at all. She knows who we are and for the most part is pretty oriented. It's very sad....judy
