   Melvin "Elmer" Austin, 78, of Quincy, formerly of Payson, Illinois, died at 1:46 pm Monday (June 29, 2015) at Blessing Hospital.

   Born July 29, 1936, Melvin was the son of Raymond and Alma Morris Austin.  

   Elmer was a member of the Early Tin Dusters, The Illinois High School Association, and the Amateur Soft Ball Association of Missouri.  He was a well-known soft ball pitcher and pitched for various teams in the area.  Elmer served as an umpire for over 32 years, umpiring in 5 national tournaments, until 2010.  

   Elmer was employed at Gardner-Denver for over 34 years as a machinist and welder.  He also worked part time at Hutter Oil Company for 27 years.  Since 2000 Elmer drove for Fierge Auto Parts.  

   Survivors include longtime companion, Elizabeth Secrest of Quincy; a daughter, Donna Stuckman of Dover, Maryland; a son, Dale E. Austin of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a sister, Nancy Humke of Quincy; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

   Mr. Austin was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Francis, Harold, and Laverne Austin; and one sister, Helen Nolen.

   Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Disseler officiating.  Burial with military honors by the U.S. Marine Corp. Funeral Detail will be in the Coatsburg Cemetery.

   Visitation will be held Thursday afternoon from 12:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to the Great River Honor Flight or the Quincy Humane Society.

Melvin, you know how special you were to me. I remember fondly our ride on the motorcycles and the times we spent together. You will be missed, more than you know.

To Elmer's family:

So sorry to learn of Elmer's passing. Will always remember his contribution to Fastpitch softball and the good time we had together at the Men's Fastpitch National Tourney in St Joesph, MO. Beside being one of the best pitchers in the area, he added to the game by umpiring for so many years. Will miss a great friend and sorry to miss his service as I am on the East Coast right now.
