MARY  E.  SCRANTON

   Mary E. Scranton, 88, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a retired nurse, formerly of Payson, died at 3:40 a.m. Thursday (March 3, 2016) in Good Samaritan Home.

   Born December 26, 1927 in Quincy, Mary was the daughter of Edward and Mary Wand Junkerman.  She married Marion F. "Bud" Scranton on April 2, 1949 at the First Union Congregational Church in Quincy.  He survives.

   Mary was a 67 year member of Payson Congregational United Church of Christ where she served as Treasurer for many years and volunteered where ever she was needed. In 1950, Mary and Bud were charter members of the Church Couples Club.

   Mary's passion in life was to help those in need. Following her graduation from Quincy High School in 1945, she enrolled in the Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri where she graduated in 1948.  Mary began her career in Nursing at Blessing Hospital where she held many positions and worked through the many additions to the hospital. She held offices in the local, regional and state Nurse's Associations and volunteered in Human Resources.  She retired in 1985 after 37 years of service.

   Mary served on the Adams County Red Cross Board and volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Services and assisted with local disasters for many years. In March, 1994, Mary was one of the nurses who helped Dr. A. J. Jumonville start the Community Outreach Clinic.

   Always active in the Payson and Quincy communities, Mary received many awards and honors. In 1993, Mary was featured by WGEM TV for services given during the flood, in 1994 She was honored by the Payson V.F.W. Post 2061 for volunteer services to the community, in 1996 was given the Outstanding Volunteer Award from KHQA TV during the 7 Who Cares Program, in 1999 was given the Women of Achievement Award in Community Service by the Quincy YWCA, in 2000 she received the Nurse of the Year Award from the Adams County Chapter of the American Red Cross and in 2003 was named the Illinois Red Cross Volunteer Nurse of the Year.  In 1990, along with her husband, Mary and Bud received the Payson Athletic Club Award and a scholarship was established in their honor for a senior athlete with academic achievement at Payson Seymour High School. In 1991 Bud and Mary were Grand Marshals for Community Service for the Old Settler's Parade and received the Community Builders Award from the Payson Masonic Lodge.  

   Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Bud; three children, Keith Scranton (Kim) of Quincy, Dr. Karen S. Winters (Carl) of St. Louis, MO and Kay E. Neisen (Kevin) of Bloomington, IL; six grandchildren, Erica Scranton, Kyle Scranton (Elyse), Derek Winters (Meredith), Erin Mitchener (Brandon), Kelsey Fry (Jimmy) and Kara Neisen; a great grandson, Maxwell Winters; three step grandchildren, Matt Galbraith (Julie), Bret Hudnut and Keri Nelson (Chris); six step great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Mary was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Bryn Winters; and a sister, Betty Schild (Bob).

   Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at the Payson Congregational United Church of Christ by Pastor Dennis Gartung.  Burial will be in the Payson New Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Saturday afternoon from 3:00 to 6:00 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy and  Sunday afternoon from 1:00 until the time of services at Payson Congregational United Church of Christ.

   Memorials may be made to Payson Congregational United Church of Christ, the Blessing Foundation for Hospice or the Good Samaritan Home.

Dick was glad to share the QHS Class of '45 with Mary and we both were glad to be your schoolmates at Seymour. We hope God's Blessings and happy memories will bring you comfort in the days ahead.
