   C. Gerald Thompson, 85, of Liberty, Illinois, died at 9:51 p.m. Tuesday (October 4, 2016) in Hannibal, Missouri.

   Born January 17, 1931 in Barry, Illinois, Gerald was the son of Noel Thompson.  He married Betty L. Dietzman on October 5, 1949 in Palmyra, Missouri.  She preceded him in death on August 7, 2004.  Gerald later met Jeanne Carroz who became a close friend and companion.

   Gerald loved being outdoors, camping and spending the winter months in Texas or Arizona. He was devoted to his family and especially enjoyed family gatherings and cookouts with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

   Mr. Thompson was the owner/operator of Thompson Excavating Company for many years and later was employed as an operating engineer until his retirement in 1993.  He was a lifetime member of Operating Engineers Local 965.

   Survivors include a son, Lindy Thompson (Mary) of Liberty, IL; a daughter, Karen Thompson of Quincy; seven grandchildren, Karessa Loos (Danny) of Quincy, Lanessa Schorn (Mike) of Liberty, IL, Gary Thompson of Warsaw, IL, Jason Thompson (Amanda) of Phoenix, AZ,  Lindsay Thompson (Ira Huff) of Sedro Wooley, WA, Tonya Buss of Quincy and Sierra Jennings of Quincy; sixteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; a son, Gerald "Gary" Thompson;  and two sisters, Vivian Thompson and Gwendolyn Slater.

   Graveside services will be held Friday morning at 11:30 in the Liberty Cemetery, Liberty, Illinois with Pastor Wayne Sutton officiating.

   Visitation will be Friday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home, 1435 State Street, Quincy, IL.

   Memorials may be made to the Blessing Foundation for Hospice.
