MARY LOU McELROY

   Mary Lou McElroy, 84, of Quincy, died at 8:12 pm, Wednesday (December 21, 2016) in Blessing Hospital.

   Born June 28, 1932, in Beardstown, Illinois, Mary Lou was the daughter of Frank and Elsie Irene DeWitt Welborn. She married Carroll E. "Mac" McElroy on April 17, 1965, in Beardstown, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 9, 2003.

   Growing up in Beardstown, Mary Lou was Valedictorian of her 1950 graduating class at Beardstown High School. She was active in the Beardstown community, working for CIPS Division Office as Secretary to the Division Engineer for 15 years while also serving as Secretary for the American Red Cross for 10 years and for the Beardstown High School Alumni Association for 13 years.  Mary Lou was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Beardstown where she taught Sunday School in the Junior Department, sang in the church choir and was in charge of the Youth Fellowship group at the church. She also sang for numerous weddings and funerals as well as giving programs at other churches, nursing homes, women's clubs and the Senior Citizen Club in Beardstown.

   Following her marriage to Mac, Mary Lou moved to Quincy where she was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church, Alpha Chapter 109 Order of Eastern Star, Abeba Temple Daughters of the Nile and was a Past President of the Berrian School PTA.  Mary Lou was employed at John Wood Community College for many years until her retirement. While at JWCC, Mary Lou worked in virtually every department, serving as secretary for Student Services, the office of the President and Assistant President, Dean of Instruction, Admissions Office and to the Director of Institutional Research and Planning.

   Mary Lou enjoyed collecting wood carvings of "loons", reading and cooking for family meals and gatherings. She was devoted to her family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

   Survivors include five children:  Marie Ellis (Gary) of Ridge Farm, IL; Kelly McElroy (Priscilla), Polly Sprick (John), Patricia Smith (Mike) and Stacey Edwards (John), all of Quincy; ten grandchildren:  Michael Ellis, Jacob Ellis, and Sarah Runyan (Greg) all of Ridge Farm, IL; Braydan Carder (Becca), and Lucas Smith of Quincy; Christopher Smith (Julia) of Springfield, IL; Ryan McElroy, Kayla McElroy, Scott Sprick and Tyler Sprick, all of Quincy; four great grandchildren:  William Runyan, Jeffrey Runyan, Milee Ellis and Addisen Ellis, all of Ridge Farm, IL; a brother;  Melvin Welborn of East Alton, IL; and many loving nieces and nephews.

   Mrs. McElroy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carroll "Mac" McElroy; two sisters-in-law:  Edith Welborn and Pansy Smith; and a brother-in-law:  Harold Smith.

   Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Jason Moncofsky officiating.  Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

   Visitation will be Monday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 at the funeral home.

   Memorials may be made to the St. Louis Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Rest In Peace Mary Lou. I have fond memories of this fine lady & my heart goes out to the family.
