AUGUST J. "GUS" PAPILI  1919-2017

   August "Gus" Papili, 97, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2017, at 3:35 a.m. in Quincy, Illinois.

   Born October 2, 1919, in Newport, Pennsylvania, August was the son of Pietro and Rosa Morigi Papili.  He married Carlinda Roke on January 3, 1942.

   August spent his childhood in Italy, returning to the United States when he was 17 years old.  He served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a paratrooper and received many awards and citations.

   He was an avid bowler, golfer and hunter.  He enjoyed walking the woods with his hunting dogs and traveling to Italy and Costa Rica to visit family and friends.

   Gus was the owner and operator of Gus Papili's Body Shop and AA Merchandising Signs Inc.  He belonged to numerous business, community and military associations and was a lifetime member of the NRA.

   He will be greatly missed by his three daughters, Nancy (Carl) Showalter, Diana Papili and Roseanne (Rod) Nance; his grandchildren, Eric (Dawn) Cluskey, Ken Cluskey, Paul (Jill) Cluskey, Sasha (Jim) Cadigan, Chris Papili, Amanda (Henry) Bitz and J.D. (Rachael) Courtney; several great grandchildren; his two brothers, Luigi Papili and Giovanni Papili; and several loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

   Mr. Papili was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Papili; two brothers, Leno and Marino Papili; and two sisters-in-law, Eletra and Nicolina Papili.

   A military service and celebration of life will be held Friday, April 14th, at 12:00 noon, at Camp Butler Cemetery and continuing until 3:00 p.m. at Boccardi's, 3132 Cockrell Lane, Springfield, Illinois.

   Memorials may be made to the Illinois Veteran's Home in Quincy, Illinois.

   Arrangements are in the care of the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home.
