Melvin E. Kuhlman, 83 of Payson died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday (May 13, 2017) in Hannibal Regional Hospital.

Melvin was born near Plainville, Illinois November 19, 1933 to Clarence A. and Wilma L. Colgrove Kuhlman at his grandparent's farm.  He married Joyce L. Rellim October 9, 1954 in the Plainville Baptist Church.  She survives

Melvin was a 1951 graduate of Seymour High School in Payson.  He was in the Army from 1956 to 1958 in Hawaii stationed at Hickam Air Force Base.  After returning from the service, he farmed in the Plainville and Fall Creek areas retiring in 1981 and then working for Bunte Trucking Service until 1998.  This got him interested in model trucks and he began building them as a hobby for adults that wanted models of their full size trucks custom built to scale from 22 gauge steel.  This took him and Joyce to many shows around the United States and shipping them to Canada and overseas.

He enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball for many years with 4-H, church and town teams.  He also enjoyed watching his great niece and great nephew play ball.  He bowled for many years and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.  He kept the basketball time clock for Seymour High School for 21 years and was inducted into the IBCA (Illinois Basketball Coaches Association) Hall of Fame in 1990 as "Friend of Basketball".  In 2015 he was also inducted into the Payson Seymour Sports Hall of Fame.  Melvin was a member of the Payson Congregational Church.

In addition he is survived by two daughters, Kelley (Brian) Stephens of Springfield, IL, Karla (Terry) Martin of Fishhook, IL: four grandchildren Dr. Mark Stephens and his fiance' (Karina), Tyler Stephens both of Springfield, IL, Whitney (Chad) Coburn and Trenton Martin both of Griggsville, IL; one great grandchild Kinley Stephens and one great grandson Coburn on the way in July.  Also surviving are two sisters Sharon Kindhart of Payson and Colleen (Larry) Davidson of Muncie, IN and a sister in-law Mary Kuhlman of Gainesville, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Kuhlman was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Marion Kuhlman.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning 11:00 a.m. in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Disseler officiating.  Burial with Military Honors by the Illinois National Guard Funeral Honors Detail will be in Stewart Cemetery near Plainville.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 and Wednesday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Plainville Stewart Cemetery or the Great River Honor Flight.

I'm so sorry. We just heard of Melvin's passing. I remember the first time we met was at the school house in Sublette. Both of you were so sweet and welcoming to us. We've enjoyed spending time with you at toy shows. Know that you have our prayers.
