SARA E. "BETTY" BENNETT

Miss Sara Elizabeth "Betty" Bennett, 93 of Sunset Home, died at 2:15 p.m. Monday (September 24, 2007) in the home.

Born July 22, 1914 in Clayton, Illinois, Sara was the daughter of Harry M. and Jane Sullivan Bennett. Her family moved to Quincy after she graduated from Clayton High School. She continued her education at Western Illinois State Teachers College where she earned her teaching certificate and completed a four year teaching degree at Quincy College.

Sara began her teaching career in 1935 at Union School near Golden. She remembered the students spoke German at home and English only at school. She later taught elementary school in Augusta, Good Hope and Galesburg before moving to Rock Island where she taugh First Grade for 21 years.

Sara retired from teaching in 1972 and moved back to Quincy to be near her family. She spent many years actively volunteering for the American Red Cross blood drives, Blessing Hospital Tea Room and tutoring at St. Peter School.

Miss Bennett was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Adams County Retired Teachers Association, Women's City Club, and the Newcomers Club. In 1993, she moved to Sunset Home where she served on the resident council and the food committee.

Surviving is a sister in law, Pauline Bennett of Quincy; a niece Sara Bradfield and her husband George of Quincy; a nephew, John T. Bennett of Quincy; four great nephews, Dan Bradfield and his wife Heather of Kansas City, MO., and Chad Bradfield and his wife Melissa, Jamie Bradfield and Scott Bradfield all of Quincy; and a cousin, Mary Jane Kroencke of Liberty, IL.

Miss Bennett was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Robert "Bud" Bennett.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and at 10:00 at the Church of St. Peter by Rev. Tom Donovan. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 and Thursday morning until the time of services at the funeral home. A vigil prayer service will be held Wednesday evening at 5:00 in the funeral home.
