J. ELIZABETH LEATHER

Mrs. J. Elizabeth Leather, 90, a life-long resident of Quincy, died at 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday (January 10, 2006) at Sunset Home.

Elizabeth was born on June 22, 1915 in Quincy, a daughter of Andrew and Viola P. Schedel Moritz. She married James Monroe Leathers on June 27, 1941 in Quincy. He died on July 13, 1983.

Mrs. Leathers was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She served her church as organist and pianist for many years, a Sunday school teacher, and frequently provided floral arrangements for church services.

She was a graduate of Quincy High School and Gem City Business College. She was employed in the circulation department of the Quincy Herald-Whig until 1945.

Elizabeth was devoted to the member of her immediate and extended family. Her interests and hobbies centered around growing both indoor and outdoor flowers. She enjoyed listening to and playing classical music.

Survivors include: a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Chapman and her husband Al of Champaign, IL.; a son, James Moritz Leathers of Quincy, three step grandchildren, Aaron Chapman, Sara Chapman and Layla Chapman, all of Champaign, IL.; three nieces, Kathryn McClure of Danville, IL., Elizabeth Ann Powell of Canton, IL. and Marcia McKenna of Conway, SC.; a nephew, Steve Moritz of Long Beach, CA.; and several great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Donald Moritz; and two sisters, Pauline Powell and Grace Caldwell.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Steve Livengood at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday evening form 5:00 until 7:00 and on Saturday morning until the time of services.
