FLOYD E. AKERS

Mr. Floyd E. Akers, 80 of 1933 S.E. Wilmar Drive, Quincy, died at 6:58 pm Thursday (January 14, 2010) in his home.

Born November 7, 1929 in Liberty, Illinois, Floyd was the son of Irvin R. and Ethel Frey Akers. He married Hazel I. Sanders on April 30, 1949 in Liberty, Illinois. She survives.

Floyd was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 100 and a life member of Quincy Masonic Lodge 296. He enjoyed woodworking and traveling with his wife, Hazel, but his greatest joy came in the time he spent with his family.

Mr. Akers served his country in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan from 1948-1949 and was later recalled into service, seeing action in Korea from 1950-1951.

Mr. Akers was employed for 12 years at Gardner Denver Company before going to Quincy Compressor/Colt Industries where he was instrumental in the formation of their research lab. He retired after 25 years in 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel; three daughters, Barbara Plunk and her husband Don of Rushville, IL, Janet Landwehr and her husband Michael of Quincy and Sheree Lansing and her husband Fred of Beverly Hills, FL; six grandchildren, Randy Plunk of Jacksonville, IL, Terry Plunk of Rushville, IL, Chris Landwehr and his wife Jamy of Quincy, Matt Landwehr and his wife Kristen of Arnold, MO, Joshua Lansing and his wife Heather of Pinellas Park, FL and Jessie Gray and her husband Joe of Ocala, FL; four great grandchildren, Brittany Landwehr, Brett Landwehr, Brantley Lansing and Jared Plunk; two brothers, Dale Akers and his wife Goldie of East Peoria, IL and Wade Akers and his wife Mary of Belton, MO; two sisters, Lois Fessler and her husband Don of Quincy and Pauline Hess of Fowler, IL; two sisters in law, Rose Akers of Princeton, IL and Lucille Akers of Laguna Hills, CA; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Akers was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Ogle; and five brothers, Elmer Akers, Everett Akers, Neil Akers, Melvin Akers and Harry Akers.

Cremation rites have been accorded to Mr. Akers. The family invites friends to celebrate Floyd's life during a visitation Monday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy.

Private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Greenmount Cemetery.
