Mr. Donald H. "Gus" Knuf, 83, of the Good Samaritan Home, formerly of 1212 South 22nd, died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday (December 11, 2004) in the home.
Born July 8, 1921 in Quincy, Mr. Knuf was the son of Frank and Mary Hermsmeier Knuf. He married Maxine M. Huseman on September 18, 1948 in Quincy. She survives.
Gus was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ and the Salem Men's Brotherhood, Twin Oaks Club, the 40-8 Club, an acitve member of the Quincy American Legion Post #37 where he was a Past Commander and a former member of the Golden K Kiwanis. Gus loved to help others as a volunteer for R. S. V. P. Meals on Wheels for many years and had received a 10 gallon pin for giving blood with the American Red Cross. Mr. Knuf served his country in the U. S. Army during WW II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, receiving three Bronze Battle Stars.
Gus was employed at Electric Wheel, a divison of Firestone Tire & Rubber for 42 years, retiring as a night superintendant in 1982.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine of Quincy; a son, Kurt Knuf and his wife Susan of Quincy; a daughter, Kathy Odean and her husband Reid of Rock Island; three grandchildren, Jason Knuf of Quincy, and Russ Odean and Emily Odean of Rock Island; a niece, Mary Kay Caldwell of Hannibal, MO.; two nephews, Michael Kovachevich and Mark Kovachevich both of Quincy; and several great nieces and great nephews.
Mr. Knuf was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Virginia Juricich and Kathleen Kovachevich.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Stephen Schuette. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post #37 will be in Greenmount Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 and Wednesday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.
