HAROLD L. COATES

Mr. Harold L. Coates, 83, of the Illinois Veteran's Home in Quincy, formerly of 3032 Lindell Ave., left this world to join his wife in the arms of his Savior, Jesus, at 6:20 a.m. Thursday (January 7, 2010) at the Veteran's Home.

Born January 20, 1926 in Shelbina, Missouri, Harold was the son of James and Lucie Kern Coates. He married Leona Grace Coates on February 5, 1955 in Central Baptist Church in Quincy. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2008.

Mr. Coates had been an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, serving many years as the Finacial Secretary. He was a former member of Columbus Road Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School. Harold and Leona loved to help others and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Harold was devoted to his family and loved spending time with them, especially his grandchildren. Mr. Coates served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II.

Mr. Coates was a graduate of Shelbina High School and attended Quincy University. He was employed for 33 years at Moorman Manufacturing, retiring as the Credit Administrator in 1987.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Shepherd and her husband Steve and Stacey Shepherd and her husband Larry both of Quincy; four grandchildren, Emily Grace Shepherd, Andrew Coates Shepherd, Stephanie Faith Shepherd and Matthew Allan Shepherd all of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Mr. Coates was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leona; two brothers, Bob Coates and Francis Coates; and a sister, Alice Tourney.

Funeral services will be Saturday morning at 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Mickey Farlow. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post 37 will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.
