DR. JAMES W. SUTHERLAND

Dr. James W. Sutherland, 86, of 5202 Homan Falls Drive, Quincy, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 11:00 a.m. Thursday (April 24, 2008) at Blessing Hospital.

Born March 27, 1922 in Glasgow, Scotland, Dr. Sutherland was the son of William James and Jean Cummings Johnston Sutherland. He married Annie McPhie on March 20, 1964 in Glasgow, Scotland She survives.

Dr. Sutherland attended Faith Christian Church. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society, Adams County Medical Society, American Urological Association, American Urological Association North Central Section, British Association of Urological Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Royal College of Surgeons of England, Illinois Urological Association where he served as Past President and the American Association of Clinical Urologists. Dr. Sutherland enjoyed golfing, tennis, reading and photography.

A 1944 graduate of the University of Glasgow, Dr. Sutherland served in the RAF from 1947 to 1957. He did Surgical and Urological training in Glasgow from 1947 to 1956 and passed the boards of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1948 and the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1950. In 1957, Dr. Sutherland obtained the highest degree in Surgery with Honors in Glasgow. The thesis for this was on the Upper Tract Stones.

Dr. Sutherland and Annie emigrated to the United States with their six children in 1966. He was a Urologist at the Valley Clinic in Ft. Madison, Iowa until 1968 when they moved to Quincy and he opened his private practice in Urology.

Survivors include his wife, Annie; three sons, Dr. Charles Sutherland and his wife Teresa of Moberly, MO., Craig William Sutherland and his wife Angela of Newnan, GA. and James Ronald Sutherland and his wife Dawn of Fowler; three daughters, Anne McIllece and her husband Patrick of Walcott, IA., June Sutherland Chiesa and her husband David of Gurnee, IL. and Patricia Sutherland Cornwell and her husband Steven of Quincy; a daugher in law, Kay Sutherland of Quincy; 23 grandchildren, James Gary Sutherland and his wife Cyndi of Hudson, IL., Linda McMillan and her husband Bryan of Archdale, N.C., Tracy McIllece and her husband Brian of Crystal Lake, IL., Sean McIllece and his wife Becky of Washington, D.C., Scott McIllece of Chicago, IL., Brian McIllece of Des Moines, IA., Justin McIllece of Washington, D.C., Ian Sutherland of Columbia, MO., Tyler Sutherland, Logan Sutherland and Shelby Sutherland all of Moberly, MO., Harrison Chiesa, Jessica Chiesa and William Chiesa all of Gurnee, IL., Jack Sutherland and Katie Sutherland both of Newnan, GA., Jeremy Mast of St. Louis, MO., Brandon Spalding and his wife Kara of Quincy, Zachary Sutherland and Courtney Nicole Sutherland both of Fowler, IL. and Madeline Cornwell and Samuel Cornwell both of Quincy; 14 great grandchildren; two brothers, William James Sutherland and his wife Fiona of St. Andrews, Scotland and Alasdair J. Sutherland and his wife Sheena of Glasgow, Scotland; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Dr. Sutherland was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Malcolm John Sutherland; a brother, Iain Sutherland; and two sisters, Margaret Sutherland and Agnes McGinlay.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Henry Pratt. Emtombment will be in Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Monday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Blessing Rieman College of Nursing or Washington Elementary School.
