JAMES MARVIN TOMPKINS

Mr. James M. "Jim" Tompkins, 84, of 2027 Cherry Lane Estates, died at 6:25 p.m. Monday (September 11, 2006) in Blessing Hospital.

Born September 28, 1921 in Williamstown, MO. Jim was the son of Earl and Marguerite Tompkins. He married Jean Brace on May 17, 1947 in Canton, MO. She survives.

Mr. Tompkins was a 1939 graduate of Williamstown High School. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and had worked in Awana Programs for many years. Jim was a member of the Quincy American Legion Post #37, the Mart Heinen Club, the Telephone Pioneers, and the Good Sam Club. He served 22 years as an RSVP Volunteer and was recently honored by induction into the RSVP Hall of Fame. He was also a dedicated volunteer with the Men of Blessing for many years. Mr. Tompkins served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theatre.

Mr. Tompkins, known affectionately as "Big Jim", was employed by Illinois Bell working in the construction and cable maintenance departments for 36 1/2 years. He retired in 1983.

Also surviving are two daughters, Debbie Sullivan and her husband Tim of Galesburg, IL. and Susan Bordewick and her husband Rick of Decatur; six grandchildren, Cindy Day and her husband Mike of Galesburg, IL, Alan Sullivan and his wife Lisa of Paducah, KY., Corey Sullivan of Galesburg, IL., Ryan Bordewick of Lisle, IL., Sarah Bordewick and Taylor Bordewick, both of Decatur, IL.; two great grandchildren, Connor and Chloe Day of Galesburg, IL.; a brother, Kenny Tompkins of Annabel, MO.; a sister, Letha Plank of Canton, MO.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Conrad Tompkins and Carol Tompkins, who died in infancy and one sister, Velma Smith.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Rev. Mickey Farlow .

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 4:00 until 8:00 and Friday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.
