
LOY F. GREENE
Mr. Loy F. (Junnie) Greene, 89, of 2009 Cherry Lane Estates, died at 1:20 p.m. Thursday (February 14, 2008) in Good Samaritan Home.
Born August 9, 1918 in Shelby County, Missouri, Loy was the son of Loy F. Sr. and Mable Gaines Greene. He married Bernice Niemann on August 31, 1940 in St. Louis, Missouri. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2002.
Mr. Greene was a 1937 graduate of Quincy High School. He was employed for the State of Illinois until he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps on May 23, 1944. After graduation from flight school, he served as a flight instructor at various training bases. He was then transferred to the China, Burma, India Theater where he flew supplies into China over the Himalaya Mountains -"the Hump". Mr. Greene was later stationed on Okinawa and briefly, Iwo Jima, flying supplies in preparation for the invasion of Japan. After the Japanese surrender, he was stationed briefly in Tokyo prior to completing his around the world journey and returning to the US. Mr. Greene was awarded several service medals, including the Air Medal, and was discharged from active duty with the rank of First Lieutenant. He later served several years in the Air Force Reserves where he attained the rank of Captain.
Following his service to the country, he owned and operated West Quincy Sales Company, a Sinclair Service Station and repair shop until his retirement in 1986. He also was a co-owner, with brother-in-laws, of the Colonial Inn Restaurant outside Hannibal, Mo. After retirement, Loy became a volunteer with the Uncle Sams Club at Good Samaritan Home and also volunteered religiously with the Men of Blessing Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis K. Greene and his wife Sharon of Walnut Creek, CA. and Gregory L. Greeneof Springfield, IL.; two grandchildren, Brett Greene of Dublin, Ca. and Denise Greene of San Francisco, Ca.; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Greene was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Claude J. Kent, former Superintendent of the IL. Veteran's Home.
Funeral services will be held Friday evening at 7:00 in the Good Samaritan Home Chapel by Chaplain Steve Disseler. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral services.
Visitation will be Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Good Samaritan Home Chapel.
Inurnment with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post # 37 will be Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in Quincy Memorial Park
