
NANCY WRIGHT SCHOLZ
Nancy Wright Scholz, 79, of 411 S. 24th died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 8,2005) in her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born Dec. 29, 1925, in Quincy, a daughter of William Otto and Mildred Raleigh Wright. She married Charles A. Scholz on June 10, 1950. Hesurvives.
She was a 1943 graduate of Quincy High School and attended Webster College and Quincy College before graduating in 1947 from the University of Missouri with a degree in English. She worked in the office at Davis-Cleaver Produce Co. prior to her graduation from college. After graduation, she worked for the Comfort Press in St. Louis, as editor of the Writer's Guide, and in the advertising department of The Quincy Herald-Whig.
While her children were growing up, she served as a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the St. Peter School PTA and as an organizer of the Parochial Music Organization.
Her love of books was expressed in other volunteer activities. She established the library at St. Peter School and taught a Great Books class
for St. Peter eighth-graders.
Nnancy was an expert genealogist and had developed extensive information on her family roots. As a member of the Great River Genealogical Society and many other genealogical societies in Missouri, Kentucky and other states, she had shared her expertise and information with dozens of other genealogists. Her work also linked her to friends and relatives throughout Europe, many of whom she visited and who visited her here in Quincy.
She loved to travel and had made 29 transatlantic trips, 15 of which included stays in Ireland. Her last trip was a voyage with her husband on
the Queen Mary II, to England, to celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary. Her love of history and learning was expressed in her participation in Elderhostel programs and POLIS, and her membership in the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County and the Illinois State Historical Society. She had been a member of the St. Mary Hospital Guild and was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, remaining active as the reference chair. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter Church and had been a member of the choir.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her five daughters, two sons, two daughters-in-law, three sons-in-law and 15 grandchildren: Sister Ann Scholz, SSND, Martha Scholz, Chuck Scholz and Becky Koch Scholz, Cathy Scholz Meckes and Steve Meckes, Chris Scholz and Monica Simmons Scholz, Mary Scholz Barber and Wake Barber, and Theresa Scholz Oakley and Dave Oakley; Charles and Jacob Scholz; Emily, William and Mary Alice Meckes; Adam, Nicholas and Benjamin Scholz; Houston and Jonathan Barber; and Katie Oakley Fialcowitz, Meghan, Anna, Laura and David Oakley. Other survivors include her cousins, Pat McManus Shannon and John McManus, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister, Mary Wright Mills.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Peter Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in St. Peter Church.
