POLLY WHITFIELD

Mrs. Pauline M. "Polly" Whitfield, 81, of 2305 Harrison, Quincy, died at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday (December 1, 2009) in Blessing Hospital.

Born May 27, 1928, in West Burlington, Iowa, Polly was the daughter of William G. and Rena Fett Sander. On June 12, 1948, she married James T. "Jim" Whitfield. He died August 16, 1993.

Polly was a graduate of Burlington High School and Gem City Business College, where she met her future husband. She was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ where she enjoyed quilting, was an active leader in educational programs during the years her three children were youth there and previously served on the church council.

Polly worked at the Quincy Public Library, the Quincy Youth Commission and she was instrumental in establishing the library at Adams Elementary School.

Survivors include three children, M. Kay Whitfield of Quincy, Janet L. Griffard and her husband, Steve, of St. Louis, MO, and their two children, Stephen and Neal Griffard, and James S. "Jim" Whitfield and his wife Jodi Bradney Whitfield of Quincy, and their children, Sander and Barrett Whitfield and Devin Bradney; a brother, William G. Sander and his wife, Mary, of Walnut Creek, CA; and eight nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Jeanette L. Hughes.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Wanda Seydel in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday until time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Salem Church or the Tri-State Audio Information Service, a group that fosters equal access to printed materials for blind, visually impaired, learning and physically disabled individuals.
