
DR. RANDALL J. McCLELLAND
Dr. Randall J. McClelland, 80, of 1528 Wilmar Dr., died at 11:33 a.m. Monday (March 27, 2006) in Blessing Hospital.
Born November 23, 1925 in Dayton, OH., Dr. McClelland was the son of Clyde V. and Margaret L. Lloyd McClelland. He married Jean Henderson on June 16, 1951 in Salem, Ohio. She survives.
After graduating from high school, Dr. McClelland served in the United States Army Air Force. After his tour of duty, he began college receiving a pre-medicine degree in 1949 from the University of Dayton. In 1953, he received his doctor of medicine from St. Louis University, undertook his internship and residency at Detroit City Hospital, and completed four years additional residency at the Kresge Eye Institute specializing in ophthalmology and eye surgery.
In 1957 Dr. McClelland joined the Stevenson Eye Clinic in Quincy. In 1972 Dr. McClelland opened his own practice at 1888 Maine and was there until his retirement in 1990.
Dr. McClelland was a member of the Friends Hill Meeting, Society of Friends, American Medical Association, Quincy Medical Society, Quincy Arts Center and the Quincy Society of Fine Arts. Dr. McClelland was a founding member of the Quincy Astronomical Society and helped to organize free viewings and special astronomical events for the public. He also invented a chair for star gazing and a star site locating device.
Dr. McClelland had a lifelong interest in sculpting. Some of his admired works are "Mother and Child", a large steel-welded sculpture located in the pediatrics ward at Blessing Hospital and a 1992 polyurethane sculpture called "Family Is a Verb," located in the hospital's lobby. Dr. McClelland's most recent work was a lifesize bronze sculpture of a Native American girl named An-na-mos-sah. It was finished in 2003 for the opening of the new Indian Mounds Pool and dedicated to the children of Quincy. This sculpture now adorns the cover of a local phonebook.
Also surviving are four sons, Jonathan McClelland and his wife Stephanie of Monroe City, MO., Chris McClelland and his wife Suzanne of Collinsville, IL., Timothy McClelland and his wife Tina of Quincy and Michael McClelland and his wife Cynthia of Maple Valley, WA.; a daughter, Peg Kruger and her husband Ben of Springfield, IL.; 17 grandchildren, Pat, Mike, Sarah, Sean, Joshua, Cori, Kelsey, Phoebe, Molly, Ryan, Stephanie, Laurin, Aaron, Anna, Andrew, Michelle and Richard; four great grandchildren, Devon, Hannah, Sean A. and Mackenzie; a brother, Dr. Clyde McClelland and his wife Joan of Sedona, AZ.; a sister in law, Dee McClelland of Ramona, CA.; and a brother in law, Robert Kleesattel of Cincinnati, OH.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Mary Margaret McClelland; a brother, David McClelland; a sister, Ardythe Kleesattel; and a nephew, Jeff McClelland.
Cremation rites have been accorded to Dr. McClelland. An announcement will be made at a later date this summer for a planned gathering of family and friends. Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quincy Arts Center.
