RICHARD SHAFFER

Richard J. Shaffer, 82, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Quincy, died Sunday April 23, 2006 at his home after a short illness.

Dick was born on July 1, 1923 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Robert and Louise Doyle Shaffer. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Brooks on May 25, 1946 in Van Nuys, California. They were later divorced. He then married Patricia Lawson Gibson on Oct. 13, 1979 in Quincy, Illinois. She died on August 29, 2004.

Dick was in sales at Altorfer Machinery for over 30 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Spring Lake Country Club in Quincy. He and his wife, Patricia wintered in Palm Springs for many years. He enjoyed playing golf and proudly served his country in the Army Air Corps in the European Theater during WWII and received among other medals, the Bronze Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Chris Coleman and her husband Ernie of Cedar Rapids, IA.; two sons, Brad Shaffer and his wife Tammy of Cincinnati, Ohio and Mike Gibson and his wife Sue of Charlotte, NC.; five grandchildren, Ty Coleman and his wife Jennifer of Iowa City, IA., Julie Guy and her husband Willie of Cedar Rapids, IA., Allison Raake and her husband Jason of Columbus, Ohio, and Austin and Aaron Shaffer of Cincinnati, Ohio; two great grandchildren, Avery and Willie Guy III both of Cedar Rapids, IA.; three sisters, Virginia McConaughy of Tacoma, Washington, Louise Wagner and Bette Mayfield both of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Mr. Shaffer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia; and a half sister, Bea Scholzen.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Charles Stevens. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post 37 will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 Noon until the time of services at the funeral home.
