SYLVAN BRUMBAUGH
Mr. Sylvan O. Brumbaugh, 89, of the Illinois Veteran's Home, formerly of 3313 Lawrence Road, died at 11:34 a.m. Friday (March 14, 2008) at the Illinois Veteran's Home.
Born December 3, 1918 in Lewistown, Missouri, Sylvan was the son of Solomon Newton and Marchie M. Thrasher Brumbaugh. He married Alice Hellhake on June 27, 1955 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She preceded him in death on June 4, 1994. He married Bonnie Burks Hampsmire on June 28, 1997 in Quincy. She preceded him in death on January 17, 2008.
Sylvan was a member of Madison Park Christian Church, Quincy American Legion Post 37, Elks Lodge No. 100, Uncle Sam's Club of Good Samaritan Home and was a volunteer at Blessing Hospital for many years. Sylvan was a Qualified Surveyor and received his pilot's license in 1949. Mr. Brumbaugh served his country as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army with
Co A 1905 Engineer Avn Battalion, seeing action in the India Burma Campaigns receiving 2 Bronze Battle Stars.
Sylvan was employed in the toolroom at Electric Wheel, a division of Firestone Tire & Rubber for 30 years. He retired on June 30, 1982.
Survivors include a son, Kurt T. Brumbaugh and his wife Karen of the state of Washington; two grandchildren, Max Brumbaugh and Austin Brumbaugh; a brother, Norman Brumbaugh and his wife Lola of Quincy; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Brumbaugh was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Alice and his second wife, Bonnie; three brothers, Arlo Brumbaugh, Elmo Brumbaugh and Kenneth Brumbaugh; and two sisters, Zelda Kolthoff and Frances Stephens.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Pastor Keith Ehresman. Burial with Military Honors by Payson V.F.W. Post 2061 will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 and Monday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Illinois Veteran's Home Activity Fund or Madison Park Christian Church.
