WILLIAM "BILL" SCHELEN

William "Bill" Schelen 75, of 1501 College, died at 12:02 a.m. Sunday (April 6, 2008) in Blessing Hospital.

Born July 9, 1932 in in Burlington, Iowa, Bill was the son of Oscar E. and Jewell Miller Schelen. He married Barbara J. Dickson on October 2, 1965 in Quincy. She survives.

Bill attended Madison Park Christian Church. He enjoyed playing pool in the Miller Lite Pool League winning many trophies. He was an avid Cubs fan and a noted speaker on UFO's having spoken to many groups and organizations. While living in California Bill played several small parts in movies and TV notably Dragnet and Have Gun Will Travel.

The majority of Bills life was spent in broadcasting in California, Texas, Florida, Iowa and Illinois. He began his Quincy broadcast career in 1970 with KHQA TV doing the weather, sports, news, Cardinal ticket giveaway and his noon day talk show. He was noted for his sign off "Since you were, thanks for watching." After his retirement from broadcasting in 1987, he was employed at Wal-Mart in the sporting goods department from 1990 until 2007. Bill's love of jazz music lead to his involvement as General Manager for radio station WQJC 107.9 FM, Quincy's radio station for jazz

Survivors also include a son Burk K. Schelen of Crawfordsville, IA; two nephews Kevin and Bradley Requet both of Jacksonville, FL; and a sister in law Shirley Requet and her husband Bill of Jacksonville, FL; and his beloved cat Tiffany.

Mr. Schelen was preceded in death by his parents and a son Brock K. Schelen

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 in Madison Park Christian Church by the Rev. Keith Ehresman. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and from 10:00 until the time of the services at the church.
