Mrs. Geneva F. Bagby, 96, of Sycamore Health Care Centre, formerly of 426 N. 29th, died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday (August 15, 2002) in the home.

Born October 31, 1905 in McDonough Co., near Tennessee, IL., Geneva was the daughter of Virgil Oscar and Florence Elizabeth Clayton Filbert. She married Bryon O. Bagby on August 11, 1928 in Peoria, IL. He died December 11, 1969.

Geneva was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, especially in the Women's Activities. She was a huge fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed listening to tapes for the blind having heard the Bible from beginning to end several times. She made many friends that brought her Meals on Wheels and loved going to the dances and many other activities at the Senior Center at Spring and Broadway. As a farm wife she loved to care for her flowers and had a huge garden canning lots of fruits, vegetables, pork and beef. Even though her eyes were not good, she sewed and hooked rugs. Her mother died when she was ten years old and she cared for her four younger brothers while her two year old sister went to live with her grandparents and an aunt. In 1992 she was held hostage in an attempted bank robbery at Town & Country Bank in which her son Jesse V. Bagby was killed.

Surviving is one daughter, Norma Jean Walmsley of Quincy; one son, Marvin Bagby and his wife Mary Jean of Cornville, AZ.; five grandchildren, Darlous Jean Hull and her husband James of Gulfport, MS., Gerald "Jerry" Vernon Bagby and his wife Reva Lynn of Quincy, Gordon Eugene Bagby and his wife Lyn of Waterman, IL., Jeffrey Eric Bagby and his wife Tracy of St. Charles, MO., and Timothy Brent Bagby of Quincy; nine great grandchildren, Matthew Brian Hill of Gulfport, MS., Madison Leigh Bagby of Waterman, IL., Jessica Lyn Bagby and Kayla Ann Bagby, both of Quincy, Britney Jean Bagby, Brenna Jean Bagby, and Braden Jeffrey Bagby, all of St. Charles, MO., and Jessica Lynn Bagby and Crystal Lee Bagby, both of Dallas, TX., one brother, Meredith Filbert and his wife Hazel of Bushnell, IL., one sister, Nellie May Hightower and her husband Bernard of Macomb, and a sister-in-law, Margaret Filber of Macomb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Jesse Vernon Bagby; a grandson, Gary Lee Bagby; three brothers, Lester, Clayton, and Virgil Filbert; and a son-in-law, Vinton Walmsley.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 in Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Rod Bakker. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Macomb.

Visitation will be held Wednesday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 at the funeral home in Quincy.

Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice or to the First Presbyterian Church.
