Mr. Clarence L. Conkle, 78, of Peoria, died at 3:25 a.m. Sunday (January 13, 2002) in St. Francis Hospital in Peoria.

Born June 25, 1923 in Amsterdam, MO., Clarence was the son of Homer Clarence and Elsie Louise McAdams Conkle. He married H. Maxine Lewis on February 14, 1945 in Brashear, MO. She died December 28, 1950. He married Virginia Booher on April 29, 1967 in Morton, IL. She survives.

Mr. Conkle was a member of the Creve Coeur Christian Church and V.F.W. Post 2078 in East Peoria. He served his country in the U. S. Army during WW II in Central Europe, the Ardennes and the Rhineland. He received three Bronze Battle Stars and the Purple Heart. He later served in the U. S. Army Reserves for 11 years in Missouri and Illinois.

Mr. Conkle was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad in Missouri and later worked as a Heat-Treat Operator for Caterpillar for 34 years, retiring in 1986.

Surviving is his wife, Virginia; three daughters, Marjorie Wilber and her husband Rev. Richard of Salem, MO., Linda Mae Lauer and her husband Dr. Lonnie of Bridgton, ME. and Ruby Jo Taylor and her husband William of Washington, IL.; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

Mr. Conkle was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Maxine.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. John Plunkett. Burial with military rites by Cyril A. Graham American Legion Post #261 will be in the Brashear, Missouri Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday morning from 9:30 until the time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
