Mr. Raymond Earl "Jerd" Cookson, 83, of 298 Lexington, formerly of Seymour, Tennessee, died at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday (September 30, 2003) in Blessing Hospital.

Born January 4, 1920 in Clayton, Ray was the son of Charles Lewis and Leona Bell Daggett Cookson. He married Mary Marie Brackett on February 23, 1941 in Palmyra, Missouri. She survives.

Ray enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and bowling and was an avid Tennessee Volunteer Football fan. Ray served his country in the U. S. Army during WW II in the North Appennines and PO Valley Campaigns in Italy, being wounded in action in April, 1944. He received two Bronze Battle Stars and was awarded the Purple Heart.

A 1938 graduate of Clayton High School and a 1958 graduate of the ICS Electrical Engineering School in Chicago, Ray was employed for 32 years at Electric Wheel, a Division of Firestone Tire and Rubber as an Electrical Engineer. He retired in 1982.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; a son, Kenneth Raymond Cookson P. E. and his wife Julie of Seymour, TN.; a niece, Betty Rambo of Cloverdale, OH.; four grandchildren, Bob Rambo and his wife Kathy of Gilboa, OH., Mary Burkart and her husband Dan of Tiffin, OH., Susan McGhee of Westin, OH. and Dan Rambo and his wife Lisa of Cleveland, OH.; seven great grandchildren; two brothers, George F. Cookson and his wife Lillian and William "Bill" Cookson both of Quincy; two sisters, Willa Bryson and her husband Charles of Marcelline, IL. and Wilma Cannon of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cookson was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Orin, Orville, James, Charles Melvin, John, Kenneth Cookson; and two sisters, Vivian Eaton and N. Maxine Myers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. George Tomko. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 and Saturday until the time of services in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
