RUSSELL MILTON CORY
 

Mr. Russell Milton Cory, 84, of 1012 Madonna Drive, died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday (December 29, 2002) in the emergency room of Blessing Hospital.

Born November 16, 1918 in Baylis, Illinois, Mr. Cory was the son of James and Maud Buchanan Cory. He married Betty Dorsey Kelle in November 1971. She preceded him in death in 1975.

Mr. Cory was a 1936 graduate of Griggsville High School and a graduate of Gem City Business College. He entered Military service on March 19, 1941 and graduated from Officers Candidate School in Ft. Benning, Georgia on March 13, 1943. During his service, he saw action in the American, Pacific and European Theatres. He was wounded in action at Bastogne, Belgium on January 15, 1945 while serving in Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army, 6th Armored Division, and was hospitalized for ten months before his discharge on November 26, 1945 as a 1st Lieutenant, Infantry. Mr. Cory was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, American Defense Service Medal, WW II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and two major Campaign Medals.

Mr. Cory was a member of Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ. He was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church for 39 years, where he served as a deacon, trustee and Elder and was the finance chairman for their first building drive. He was also a member of Lambert Lodge No. 659, Quincy Consistory, Ainid Shrine Temple, Quincy High Twelve Club, Quincy American Legion Post #37 and was a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Mr. Cory loved basketball and was an avid Quincy Blue Devil and Quincy University Hawk fan.

Mr. Cory was employed by the Internal Revenue Service from 1948 until 1970. His work earned him a High Quality Performance Award in 1965, and a Superior Performance Award and Employee Suggestion Award in 1968. Upon his retirement he was awarded the Albert Gallatin Award. He later worked as an Audio-Visual repairman for the Quincy Public Schools for 15 years.

Surviving is a daughter, Deborah "Cory" Freeman and her husband Donald of Palm Bay, FL.; three sons, James Cory and his wife Joanne of Des Moines, IA., Russell Cory II of Champaign, IL. and Calvin Kelle and his wife Laura of Quincy; twelve grandchildren; Christopher Morrison and his wife Stephanie of Tuscon, AZ., Melinda "Mindy" Morrison of Quincy, Joe Cory and his wife Sara of Chicago, IL., James Cory II of Des Moines, IA., Angela Cory of Grand Rapids, MI., Michael Cory, Kayte Cory and Sean Cory all of Champaign, IL., and Erica Kelle, Travis Kelle, Logan Kelle and Conner Kelle all of Quincy; a brother, Marlin Cory and his wife Frieda of Barry; two sisters, Florene Biddle of Griggsville and Martha Jane Gregg and her husband Dr. Michael of Santa Rosa, CA.; a longtime special friend, Joan Groh of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cory was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Isabelle Stone; and two brothers in law, Lewis Stone and Donald Biddle.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 in Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ by the Rev. Stephen Schuette. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post #37 will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and Thursday from 12:30 until the time of services at Salem Church. Lambert Masonic Lodge No. 659 will conduct services Wednesday evening at 6:00 in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Salem Church, Shriner's Children's Hospital or the Quincy Humane Society.
