BRIGADIER GENERAL (Ret.) WILLIAM E. DORIS
 

Brigadier General William E. Doris, (U. S.Army, Ret.) 75, of the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy, formerly of Morton, Springfield and Decatur Illinois and Bradenton, Florida, died at 8:50 p.m. Thursday (February 19, 2004) in the Veterans Home.

Born March 14, 1928 in Chicago, General Doris was the son of Frank G. and Opal Roe Doris. He married JoAnn Striegel on July 13, 1952 in the Flora Christian Church in Flora, Illinois. She survives.

General Doris was a member of West Side Christian Church in Bradenton, Florida, Flora Masonic Lodge AF & AM, American Legion, V. F. W., and was a Life Member of the Korean War Veterans Association, Illinois National Guard Association, Military Officers Association of America and the Alumni Association U. S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, PA.

General Doris was a graduate of Clay City, IL. High School, SIU in Carbondale with a BS in Accounting, U. S. Treasury School and the University of Alabama. While in the military he attended the Infantry Officers Basic and Advance Courses, Command and General Staff College, National Security Management Program, Industrial College of the Armed Forces and the Army War College Senior Officer Course.

General Doris began his military career by enlisting in the U. S. Army in January 1946. He enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard in June 1950 serving with Company D, 130th Infantry Regiment as a Sergeant First Class. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on June 14, 1951. While on active duty his assignments included, Commander, HHC, 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry and Commander, Co G, 179 Infantry. His Illinois Army National Guard command positions have been, Commander, HHC, 130th Infantry, Commander, HHC, 2nd Battle Group, 130 Infantry, Commander, 1st Battalion, 123rd Infantry, Commander, 1st Battalion, 123rd Infantry, Commander, 1144th Transportation Battalion, Task Force Commander, 44th Support Center RAO, Commander, 66th Infantry Brigade, 47th Infantry Division, Assistant Division Commander, 47th Infantry Division, and Assistant Adjutant General - Army, State of Illinois Army National Guard from 1984 until his retirement in 1988. He was federally recognized as Brigadier General on February 8, 1979. General Doris served over 39 years of active commissioned service, and was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Battle Star with Valor for his service in Korea.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn; a son, Matthew E. Doris and his wife Robin of Vero Beach, FL.; two grandchildren, Zachary M. Doris and Nicholas J. Doris of Stuart, FL.; four nephews, David Doris and his wife Pam of Springfield, Rod Doris and his wife Jana of Clay City, Mark Doris and his wife Tami of Olney and Don Doris of Noble; and a sister in law, Deloris Doris of Flora.

General Doris was preceded in death by his father; his mother Opal Roe Wantland; a step father, Charles Wantland; maternal grandparents, Albert & Nellie Roe; and two brothers, Richard Doris and Frank Doris and his wife Gennell.

Cremation rites were accorded to General Doris. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 12:00 Noon in Madison Park Christian Church. Officiating Ministers will be Brian Henry, Keith Ehresman and Bruce Willard.

Visitation will be Tuesday morning from 10:30 until the time of services at Madison Park Christian Church.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 in the Clay City Christian Church in Clay City, Illinois Inurnment with Military Honors will follow in the Clay City Cemetery.
