| Virgil A. Grawe, 79, of 1533 College, died at 10 p.m. Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) in Blessing Hospital. Born July 1, 1921, in Quincy, he was a son of John and Mary Altrogge Grawe. He married Clara L. Goodwin May 13, 1950, in Quincy. She died Jan. 31, 1997. Mr. Grawe was employed as a mill operator at Moorman Manufacturing from 1959 until retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Quincy American Legion 37 and VFW Post 5129. He also was a member of the Marine Corps League, helping with its activities at the Illinois Veterans Home and the Toys for Tots Project. He loved working outdoors and enjoyed working on cars. He served his country in the Marine Corps during World War II, seeing combat in New Guinea and Okinawa. Survivors include four daughters, Susan Murry and her husband, Patrick, Dianne Hively and her husband, Richard, and Sandra Wagy and her husband, Chris, all of Quincy, and Marilyn Solter and her husband, Lance, of Chesterfield, MO.; six grandchildren, Leanne Tournear and her husband, Mark, Angela Massingill, Mason Murry and Tayler Murry all of Quincy, and Bryan Solter and Jay Solter, both of Chesterfield; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Grawe was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Heather Hively; three sisters, Viola "Dolly" Miller, Irma Grawe and an infant sister, Leona Grawe; and two brothers, Jerome and Lee Grawe. Services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and at 1 p.m. in St. Francis Catholic Church by the Rev. James Wheeler. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday in the funeral home with a Christian wake service at 5 p.m. Memorials may be made to Marine Corps League's Toys for Tots Project. |
