Mr. Ellis Carson Griggs, 92, of the Illinois Veterans Home, formerly of
Plainville, died at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday (August 24, 2004) in Blessing
Hospital.

Born September 3, 1911 in Payson, Ellis was the son of Ernest and Ada
Mewmaw Griggs. He married Emma Marian Earnst on July 12, 1947 in the
Christian Church Parsonage in Payson. She died October 20, 2000.

Mr. Griggs was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was
widely known for his horseshoe pitching, winning the State Horseshoe
Tournament 10 times and winning Second Place in the International Contest in
Pennsylvania and Fourth Place in the World Tournament in Salt Lake City,
Utah. Mr. Griggs served his country in the U. S. Navy as a pharmacist
onboard the destroyer escort Coolbaugh during WW II in the Asiatic Pacific
Theatre, receiving 5 Bronze Stars.

Mr. Griggs and his wife owned and operated Griggs Grocery in Plainville
for 30 years until his retirement.

Surviving is a sister, Emma Heine of Liberty; nine nieces and nephews,
Darlene Paben and her husband Raymond of LaPrairie, Dolores Jucknies of
Montgomery, AL., Marvin Larimore and his wife Rowena of Plainville, Neil
Larimore and his wife Darlene and Marcia Copher and her husband Ed both of
Milford,Donna Mibbs and her husband Bob of Chandlerville, Janet Bingaman and
her husband Dan of Barry, Ronald Heine and his wife Gill of Edmonds, WA. and
Bob Sloniger and his wife Juanita of Crete,; and several great nieces and
great nephews.

Mr. Griggs was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Emma; a
brother, Harry Griggs; a sister, Lucy Larimore; a niece, Maxine Sloniger; a
sister in law, Josephine Griggs; and two brothers in law, Omer Larimore and
Russell Heine.

Funeral services will be held Saturday moring at 10:30 in Calvary
Baptist Church by the Rev. L. D. Grant. Burial with Military Honors by
Payson V. F. W. Post 2061 will be in the New Cemetery in Payson.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 in the Zehender
Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy and Saturday morning from
9:30 until the time of services at Calvary Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church or the charity of the
donor's choice.
