GRANVILLE "BABE" HILL
 

Mr. Granville "Babe" Hill, 89, of Liberty, died at 3:20 a.m. Friday (May 14, 2004) in Blessing Hospital.

Born October 17, 1914 in Beverly, Mr. Hill was the son of Harry C. and Edith Sykes Hill. He married Mildred Hull on December 4, 1941 in Pittsfield, Illinois. She survives.

Babe attended Beverly grade school and graduated from Baylis and Griggsville High School in 1930. Following graduation, he came to the family farm east of Beverly where he lived his entire life. He attended many livestock sales in Illinois and Missouri and made many friends wherever he went. He sold fat cattle and worked with them so much they became pets. He also loved sports and played baseball and softball with many local teams, including the Farm Bureau teams , many of which played in the state championships. Babe loved being with his family and was never happier than when attending events his children and grandchildren participated in.

Babe was an active member of the Beverly United Methodist Church, serving as Trustee for many years and helped plan and worked on many projects for the rededication in 1967. He also took an active role in his community, serving on the Liberty School Board of Education for 16 years, and was a member of the Liberty Lions Club for 43 years, serving on the Fall Festival Supper Committee and many other activities, the Beverly Cemetery Association where he served as Secretary and Treasurer for 30 years, the Adams County Farm Bureau and he served as a Beverly Park Commissioner for many years. Babe was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for 64 years, first with the Kingston Lodge and currently with the Payson Masonic Lodge No. 379.

In later years, he and Mildred spent many winter months in Florida. They made many life long friends from all over the U. S. and Canada.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred; a son, Roger Hill and his wife Lynn of Liberty; a daughter, Judy VanDeBoe and her husband Alan of Quincy; four grandchildren, Greg Hill and his wife Lisa of Grand Rapids, MI., Kevin Hill of Knoxville, TN., Amy VanDeBoe of Bloomington, IL. and Jill Babey and her husband Rich of Champaign, IL.; two great grandchildren, Jordan and Tyler Hill of Grand Rapids, MI.; a brother in law, Paul Hull and his wife Kathryn of Quincy; a sister in law, Yvonne Hill of Pittsfield; and several neices, nephews, cousins and many loving friends.

Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Russell Hill.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11:00 in the Beverly United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lee Reffett. Burial will be in Mound Prairie Cemetery in Beverly.

Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home in Quincy and Monday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the Beverly United Methodist Church. Payson Lodge No. 379 will conduct Masonic services Sunday evening at 7:00 in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Beverly United Methodist Church or the Beverly Cemetery Association.
