Mrs. Vera Caroline Hollis, formerly of 635 North 16th, died at 4:53 p.m. Monday (August 4, 2003) in Blessing Hospital.

Born October 10, 1911 in Richfield, Township, Adams County, Illinois, Vera was the daughter of William and Lera Schwartz Smith. She married Fred D Hollis on November 23, 1929 in Keokuk, Iowa and celebrated 72 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on September 12, 2002.

Mrs. Hollis was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Western Catholic Union. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president for both the Hannibal and Quincy Posts. Vera was an avid card player and enjoyed organizing card parties and playing cards at many church events.

Mrs. Hollis was a wonderful mother and homemaker.

Vera was the bookkeeper for the family business, Ship Shape Laundry and Shamrock Baby Service in Quincy and Keokuk.

Surviving are three daughters, Gloria Broun of St. Louis, MO., Lera Mosley and her husband Robert of Hannibal, MO. and Pamela Schwada and her husband Fred of Geneseo, IL.; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a brother, Loran Smith of Hannibal, MO.; a sister Dene Carlson of Palmyra, MO.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hollis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, William Smith and Clarence Smith; a sister, Margaret White; and a son in law, Dr. Goronwy Broun.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and at 10:00 in St. Francis Catholic Church by the Rev. Jim Finn. Burial will be in Grandview Burial Park in Hannibal.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 and Thursday morning until the time of services at the funeral home. A Christian wake service will be held Wednesday evening at 7:30 in the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Blessing Foundation for Hospice or the American Legion Post 37 Auxiliary.
