Hazel Alberta Kuntz, 97, of Sunset Home, died at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday (April 7, 2004) at the home. Born December 25, 1906, in Liberty Township, Hazel was the daughter of Frederick W. and Lydia M. Schmiedeskamp Kuntz. A 1924 graduate of Seymour High School in Payson, Hazel received her baccalaureate degree in mathematics in 1929 from Carthage College. She also completed the Stenographic Program at Gem City Business College and later graduated from the Federal Art School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Hazel became a pen and ink layout artist for Quincy Photo Engraving until WW II when she was employed at Gem City Business College as a typewriting instructor. Following the war, she went back to Quincy Photo Engraving where she worked as a commercial artist until her retirement when the company closed in 1967. Hazel was a member of Luther Memorial Church. Well known as a "rock hound", Hazel loved to search and trade for rock specimens to add to her collection, which was one of the largest in the area. She joined the Gem City Rock and Mineral Club in 1964 and served as Secretary, bulletin editor and President. She also served as the Illinois Director and later as President of the Midwest Federation of the Mineralogical and Geological Societies, presiding over 267 clubs and 17,000 members in seven Midwestern states and one Canadian province. Surviving are several cousins and friends. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Leland Uden. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Luther Memorial Church Building Fund or the
