Mr. Loren "Sonney" Ludwig, 77, of 1823 North Highland Drive, died at 3:18 a.m. Wednesday (May 19, 2004) in Blessing Hospital.

Born August 16, 1926 in Quincy, Mr. Ludwig was the son of Loren Mester and Glenadene Wilkes Ludwig. He was raised by his mother and step father, Ralph Ludwig. He married Lois Rae Stevens on August 18, 1946 in Quincy. She survives.

Mr. Ludwig served his country in the U. S. Navy during WWII with the 5th Division Rangers of the Marine Corps, serving in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre. He landed on two beach heads, Normandy and Omaha Beach and was among the first Americans to free the prisoners in Hitler's death camps. Mr. Ludwig received a Silver Star.

A graduate of Quincy High School, Sonney helped his step-father in the family's grocery business, Ludwig's Market, managing the store at 5th & Locust. He trained as an X-ray Technician at St. Mary Hospital and was employed by St. Mary Hospital. He was the chief technician and taught X-ray at Sacred Heart Hospital in Ft. Madison, Iowa for 23 years and then was the chief technician at Boswell Hospital in Sun City, Arizona until his retirement in 1992. He was very highly thought of by the doctors and those in his profession who worked with him.

Survivors include his wife, Lois; a daughter, Linda Arns of Quincy; a grandson, Michael Arns and his wife Tiffany of Quincy; four great grandchildren, Larry Arns and Kendra Arns of Quincy, and Kylie Arns and Cole Arns of Monmouth, OR.; a sister, Cleora Pezman of Quincy; a brother in law, Fred Stevens and his wife Joyce of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Ludwig was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers in law, Judge Alfred Pezman, and twins, Donald and Ronald Stevens.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10:30 in St. James Lutheran Church by the Rev. Marlin Rempfer. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post #37will be in Sunset Cemetery in Quincy.

Visitation will be Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 at Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and Monday morning from 9:30 until the time of services at St. James Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to St. James School Building Fund.
