Melvina Penny Mann of 825
College departed this life July 20th at 2:30 pm
at Blessing Hospital.
The 18th child of 25 born to Reverend, Henry and Nancy (Weathers) Penny,
Melvina was born January 22, 1922 in Portageville, Missouri. She was raised
in the Ozarks area and went on to marry the love of her life, Reverend
George Mann, on October 28th, 1940 who preceded her in death June 3rd
1978.
She was a loving, devoted and active minister's wife, the former First
Lady of First Baptist Church of Quincy, IL where he pastored for seventeen
years. She was very active in the church and in work throughout the
community. She also worked in the Quincy work force in Head Start, in
the
Quincy School System, as a personal assistant for West Central
Illinois/Center for Independent Living. One of her most fulfilling jobs
was
working for the YMCA caring for the children while the mother's exercised.
The children look forwarded to Grannie rocking them in Grannie big rocking
chair.
She attended the First Baptist Church, 739 North 8th Street in Quincy,
IL
where she was an active member for forty years, during those years she
served in the choir, as a Sunday School teacher, vacation bible school
teacher, as well as many offices and clubs. She was also a most active
member on
the Mother's Board of First Baptist Church. She was known by all as "Mother
Mann". When you saw her, you could see her love for GOD. She believed
in
Praising the Lord with a joyful voice at all times, even in times of
troubles, the death of mother, husband, daughter and in her own short
illness.
She would say "The LORD is greatly to be praise. His praise shall
continually be in my mouth. Praise HIM." Whenever you saw her dressed
for
church, her hats left a memorable impression on all who saw them.
She was an outstanding community worker, she had a food ministry, and
a
clothing ministry. She was a foster parent in addition to running a shelter
care for the elderly to prevent them from being in a nursing home and
to allow
them to live a family. She taught hat making and she was a mentor to many.
Melvina was preceded in death by her husband Rev. George Mann, two daughters
Nancy Melvin Sue, and Barbara Moore she is survived by six daughters and
one
son. Shirley Cartwright of Quincy, IL, Georgetta Austin, of Quincy, IL,
Carol Simpson (Alvin Simpson) of Quincy, Brenda Winslow ( Wendal Winslow)
of
Chicago IL, Deborah Kemp (Rev Philip Kemp) of Quincy, IL, Alicia Manely
(
Johnell Manely) of Chicago IL, George Victor Mann of Los Angeles, Calf.
She was the proud grandmother of 20 grandchildren and 18 great grand
children all heirs of a rich legacy. She is survived by May Bird of Ironton
MO, Mary Watkins of St. Louis MO. VT Givens (Robert Givens) of St. Louis
MO,
Robert Penny (Ann Penny), of Inkster Michigan, Henry Penny of Inkster
Michigan. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins and other relatives.
Mother Mann was mother to many her extended family are many daughters
and
sons your names and what you meant to her and the family is written in
heaven.
Services are as follows: Visitation will be Wednesday July 28th from
4:00 to 7:00 pm at First Baptist Church 739 North 8th, with a Life
Celebration Service from 7:00 to 8:00, followed by a repast at St. Rose.
Homegoing Services will be 11:00 am Thursday July 29th at First Baptist
Church 739 N. 8th Quincy IL. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery. Repast
will be at St Rose
Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Yes I Can Learning Center.
