CARROLL E. "MAC" McELROY
 

Mr. Carroll E. "Mac" McElroy, 76, of 700 South Hilltop Drive, died at 8:25 a.m. Thursday (October 9, 2003) in his home.

Born March 28, 1927 in White Hall, Illinois, Mac was the son of Edward and Sarah Hutton McElroy. He married Lucille Clause in 1950. She died in 1964. He married Mary Lou Welborn on April 17, 1965 in Beardstown, Illinois. She survives.

Mr. McElroy was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church, a former member of Virden Lodge No. 161 and current Worshipful Master of Herman Lodge No. 39 in Quincy, Quincy Consistory receiving the Meritorious Service Award from the Illinois Council of Deliberation on June 6, 1987, Ansar Shrine Temple of Springfield, Quincy Shrine Club where he was a Past President, Quincy Moose Lodge, a Past President of the Quincy Jaycees, an Exalted Exhausted Rooster with the Jaycees, a member of the South Side Boat Club and United Commercial Travelers. Mac was instrumental in getting the lights installed at Wavering and Boots Bush Parks. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Mr. McElroy served his country in the U. S. Navy during WW II.

Mac began his career with CIPS on October 1, 1946 as a class B Groundman. He later became a class A groundman, an apprentice lineman and a lineman. He became a distribution engineer until 1981, when he became the Electrical Area Operations Supervisor. He retired from CIPS on October 1, 1995 after 49 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; a son, Kelly J. McElroy and his wife Priscilla of Quincy; four daughters, Marie Ellis and her husband Gary of Ridge Farm, IL., Polly Sprick and her husband John, Patricia Smith and her husband Mike and Stacey Edwards and her husband John all of Quincy; nine grandchildren, Sarah, Michael and Jacob Ellis all of Ridge Farm, IL., Kayla and Ryan McElroy, Braydan Carder, Chris and Lucas Smith and Scott Sprick all of Quincy; a sister, Pansy Smith of Virden, IL.; and two nieces, Sarah Fowler of Havana, IL. and Delores Forbes of Morrisonville, IL.

Mr. McElroy was preceded in death by his parents; a nephew, Harold Smith; two nieces, Mittie Ballinger and Donna Juarez; and several aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. David Alberts. Burial with Military Honors by Quincy American Legion Post 37 will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Monday until the time of services at the funeral home. Herman Masonic Lodge No. 39 will conduct services Sunday evening at 7:00 at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital.
