Mr. Eugene J. Newkirk, 79, of 2105 Prairie Ave., died Friday (January 3, 2003) in Blessing Hospital.

Born September 1, 1924, in Quincy son of Joseph and Catherine Kuhn Newkirk.

He married Merley Miller, March 16, 1957 in Quincy. She survives.

During his life Gene served as secretary of the First Union Congregational Church Board, the Quincy Civic Music Association Board, and the Quincy Symphony Board. In recent years Gene was a volunteer at the Villa Katherine Tourist Center and served on the Curriculum Committee for the POLIS Program at Quincy University. Mr. Newkirk served his country in the Army during WWII in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre receiving four Bronze Battle Stars and three OverSeas Bars.

He is survived by three children; Ina Peters of Oak Grove, MO., Jane and husband Roger Blickhan of San Clemente, CA., and George Moody II of Denver, PA.; granddaughter Laurie and husband Gene Westcott and great granddaughter Miranda of Hannibal, MO.; grandson "R.J." Blickhan and wife Aura and great granddaughter Denver of Oceanside, CA.; granddaughter Monica and husband Gary Fanning of Lawerence, KS., grandson Doug Blickhan and wife Cheryl and great grandsons Mitchell and Jake of Temecula, CA., grandson George Moody III and wife Michelle and great grandson Stephen Hyatt of Port Huron, MI., and grandson Eric Moody and wife Nicole and great grandchildren Cameron and Emily of Lebanon, PA., and three brothers, George Newkirk and his wife Mariealana of Ocala, FL., Charles Newkirk and his wife Pauline of Quincy, and Richard Newkirk of MD.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, William, Robert, and Mitchell Newkirk, two sisters, Emma Barnes and Sister Mary Irwin.

Gene took great joy in sharing his knowledge of music with his children and friends. He will be sadly missed. There never was a kinder man.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 10:00 in Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Rev. Henry D. Murray. Private family burial will be in Sunset Cemetery at the Illinois Veterans Home.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 and Wednesday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Villa Katherine Building Fund or the Sunday Music Series.
