Mr. John Nielsen, 84, of 1701 Kent Ave., died at 1:45 a.m. Friday (May 7, 2004) at Blessing Hospital.

Born February 10, 1920 in Edmore, MI., John was the son of John Daniel and Bessie Hankins Nielsen. He married Dorothy M. Drew on February 12, 1944 in Canton, IL. She died October 15, 1999.

Mr. Nielsen was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and traveling. John served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII serving a term of duty in Greenland and in Europe receiving a Purple Heart in the Battle of the Bulge and two Bronze Battle Stars.

He was employed as a moulder for Peerless Pump. He later worked for Tincan and Gardner Denver. John then worked at Moorman Manufacturing for 27 years in Protein Processing and then in the Safety Department befor retiring in 1982.

Surviving is a daughter, Drew Ann McDermott of Quincy; a son, Bruce E. Nielsen of Davenport, IA.; three grandchildren, Anthony McClean of Quincy, Brian Nielsen of Elridge, IA., and Holly Shaw and her husband Barry of Davenport, IA.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by Rev. Barry Clair. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 4:00 until 8:00 and Monday morning until the time of services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Assembly of God Church in Quincy or to Hillcrest Baptist Church in Davenport, IA.
