Mrs. Harriette A. Orange, 85, of 2031 Spruce Street, died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday (February 25, 2003) in her home. Born July 8, 1917 in Quincy, Harriette was the daughter of Samuel and Cecile Johnson Robinson. She married George Washington and of this union six children were born. After George’s death, she married William D. Orange on December 27, 1952 in Quincy, to which a daughter was born. He died November 30, 1999. Harriette was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Church Women’s United, Wimodasis Club, Service Circle and President of Baptist Young People’s Union. She was a life member of the PTA, was a past president of the Dewey School PTA and served on various committees, past president of Quincy Junior High School PTA, Quincy Senior High I and Senior High II, past president of Quincy Council PTA, and served as director for PTA District 8 and on the state board of managers. Harriette was also a past president of the Adams County Home extension, a member of the Ladies Standard Review Club and Current Events Club, and was a past member of the Board of the College for Kids at Quincy College. Harriette was also a member of the Adams County Senior Citizens Board, RSVP Council and was a past secretary of AARP. She served for many years on the board and as treasurer of the YWCA and was honored in 1985 as the Volunteer of the Year for her work with the youth of the community. Harriette was an avid bowler and was a member of Quincy Women’s Bowling Board and served for 40 years, many as secretary and treasurer of the Quincy Area Junior Bowlers. She also served for two years on the state board of Junior Bowlers. Harriette worked for St. Mary’s Hospital and as a domestic housekeeper for many years. Surviving are two daughters, Cecile Johnson & Tamara (Tami) Hardy
and her husband, all of Minneapolis; three sons, George Washington and
his wife Karen of Marysville, CA; Lee Washington and his wife Gail of
New Orleans; David Washington and his wife Loraine of Columbus, OH; and
23 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
A brother, Emmett Robinson of Springfield, IL and many living nieces
and nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11:00 in Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Orville Jones. Entombment will be in the Quincy Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be Monday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church. |
