| Mrs. Velma C. Pero, 85, of 716 Ashley, died Saturday (February 2, 2002) in the home of her son, Roger Blickhan,
in San Clemente, CA. Born January 29, 1917 in Humphrey, MO., Velma was the daughter of Roger C. and Sallie Buckner Elwood. She married Roger E. Blickhan Sr. on June 26, 1937. He preceded her in death. She later married Guy Pero on April 10, 1954. He died January 4, 1969. Velma was a member of Faith Christian Church. She enjoyed country music, dancing, bowling and going to the movies. Velma was employed as a department supervisor at Gardner Denver for 23 years, retiring in December, 1983. Following her retirement, Velma attended John Wood Community College. She began her volunteer work with the R.S.V.P. Unit at John Wood College. When she was 73, Velma was still working nine months out of the year to honor her longtime commitment to the United Way of Adams County. She was recognized for her work with the United Way in 1989, receiving the Private Industry Council Award. Her volunteer work also included, Two Rivers Regional Council, Transitions of Western Illinois, Easter Seals, Blessing Hospital, the Senior Citizens Center and the Gardner Museum. Surviving is a son, Roger Blickhan Jr. and his wife Jane of San Clemente, CA.; three daughters, Jean Oberling of Quincy, Pamela Reckers and her husband Tom of Quincy, and Carole R. Henze and her husband Gene of Louisville, KY.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and a sister, Eunice E. Turner. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 in Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home by the Rev. Henry Pratt. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday until the time of services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. |
