Mrs. Shirley J. Powell, 77, of 2411 Hampshire, died at 8:31 a.m. Monday (August 5, 2002) in her home.

Born June 18, 1925 in Quincy, Shirley was the daughter of Carl and Lola Royalty Voorhis. She married Joseph "Bud" Powell on July 2, 1949 in Palmyra, Missouri. He died on February 11, 2001.

Shirley enjoyed quilting, doing jigsaw puzzles and reading. She also volunteered at the Illinois Veterans Home, Senior Citizens Center and Blessing Hospital. Shirley will be remembered as a great cook, especially enjoying cooking for Christmas. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren always looked forward to a box of cookies from Grandma.

Shirley was employed at Pix Photo where her quick smile and friendly greeting made many friends over the 35 years she worked there. She retired in 1990.

Surviving is a daughter, Donna Powell of Kansas City, MO.; two sons, Roger Wyatt of Phoenix, AZ. and James Wyatt and his wife Linda of Rockford, IL.; three grandchildren, Amanda Austin of San Diego, CA., Todd Wyatt and his wife Mary and Ted Wyatt of Denver, CO.; four great grandchildren, Jackson Wyatt of Denver, CO. and Angela Austin, Ashlee Austin and Gabriella Austin all of San Diego, CA.; a sister, Onalee Stephens of LaGrange, MO.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Ronald Voorhis; and a sister, Patricia Kramer.

Graveside services will be held Friday morning at 9:30 in Greenmount Cemetery by the Rev. James Reynolds.

There will be no visitation, but friends are invited to the services. Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Markword Infirmary 2nd Floor of the Illinois Veterans Home.
