RUTH M. SCHMITS
 

Mrs. Ruth M. Schmits, 79, of the Good Samaritan Home Cottages, died at 9:57 a.m. Tuesday (May 11, 2004) in the emergency room of Blessing Hospital.

Born September 22, 1924 in Mendon, Ruth was the daughter of John and Flora May Worman Daugherty. She married Harley Elston on February 13, 1945 in Quincy. He died December 14, 1981. She married Joseph Schmits on December 21, 1985 in Quincy. He died September 28, 1997.

Ruth was an active member of Union United Methodist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Adams County Home Extension. Ruth loved to travel, crochet and quilt, organize family photo albums and spend time with her family and friends.

Ruth worked at Cunes Factory in Chicago during WW II. She then worked at the grocery store in West Point along with helping her husband Harley farm. She also worked at the International Shoe Factory in Quincy.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Goodwin and her husband Bill of Pittsfield and Linda Schmitt and her husband Larry of Colchester; four grandchildren, Amy Schmitt of Quincy, Eric Schmitt and his wife Carri of Hudson, IL., Tony Goodwin and his wife Kara and Chris Goodwin and his wife Molly all of Pittsfield; seven great grandchildren, Todd Turner, Seth Bruenger, Tucker Bruenger, Jami Goodwin, Alex Goodwin, Emily Goodwin and Madalyn Schmitt; a sister, Cleo Rampley and her husband Wesley of Quincy; three brothers, Leland Daugherty and his wife Mary, John Daugherty Jr. and his wife Lila and Lloyd Daugherty and his wife Carol all of Mendon; several nieces and nephews; her best friend and cousin, Charlotte Berman of Quincy; and two step daughters, Carolyn LaRue of Templeton, CA. and Patty Schmits of Monticello, MN. and their families.

Mrs. Schmits was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and a brother, Marvin Daugherty.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:00 in the Union United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Morwell. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home and Friday from 9:00 until the time of services at Union Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church.
